Although listed in a three year format, many ISP students spread the program over four years in order to combine an ISP major with a second major. Specific requirements for the most popular second majors for ISP students can be found by choosing from the menu below. Second majors in departments other than those listed below are also possible.
- Biological Sciences
- Chemistry
- Computing and Information Systems
- Earth and Planetary Sciences
- Environmental Sciences
- Mathematics
- Physics and Astronomy
Students majoring in ISP who wish to complete a second major in biological sciences should fulfill the following requirements in place of the usual requirements for the major in biology:
- They may not substitute ISP 398 for any biology or chemistry course in the ISP curriculum.
- Chemistry 212-2 (Organic Chemistry)
In addition, they must also complete the following requirements for the concentration.
- Biochemistry
- Biol 321 Physical Biochemistry
- Biol 361 Protein Structure and Function
- Chem 210-3 Organic Chemistry III with Lab
- Evolutionary and Developmental Biology
- Biol 342 Evolutionary Processes
- Biol 391 Developmental Biology
- Biol 344 Vertebrate Morphology and Ontogeny Lab
- Genetics and Molecular Biology
- Biol 390 Molecular Biology
- Biol 395 Molecular Genetics
- Biol 353 Molecular Biology Lab
- Neurobiology
- Biol 302 Fundamentals of Neurobiology I
- Biol 306 Fundamentals of Neurobiology II
- Biol 305 Neurobiology Lab
- Physiology
- Biol 325 Animal Physiology
- Biol 356 Endocrinology
- Biol 358 Physiology Lab
- Plant Biology
- Biol 330 Plant Biology
- Biol 349 Plant Community Ecology
- Biol 350 Plant Evolution and Diversity Lab
For more information, please contact Dr. Gary Galbreath in the Undergraduate Program in Biological Sciences.
Students majoring in ISP who wish to complete a second major in chemistry may not substitute ISP 398 for any chemistry course in the ISP curriculum, and must take these courses:

- Chem 212-2,3 Organic Chemistry
- Chem 220 Instrumental Analysis
- Chem 333 Inorganic Chemistry
- Chem 350-1,2,3 Advanced Lab
- Concentration
- Two courses from selected area
- Two courses from selected area
For more information, please contact Dr. Barry Coddens in the Department of Chemistry.
Computing and Information Systems
Students majoring in ISP who also wish to complete a second major in computing and information are required to take the following courses:
- Core Requirements
- EECS 101 Intro to Computer Science
- EECS 111 Computer Programming I
- EECS 211 Computer Programming II
- EECS 213 Intro to Computer Systems
- EECS 310 Discrete Math
- EECS 311 Intro to Data Structures
- Breadth Requirements
- Five courses, one each in Theory, Systems, AI, Interfaces, and Software Development
- Project Work Requirement
- Two quarters of ISP 398 or EECS 399 approved by both ISP and CIS adviser
For more information, please contact the CIS Undergraduate Program Director.
Students majoring in ISP who wish also to complete a major in earth and planetary sciences must fulfill the following requirements in place of the usual requirements for the major in earth and planetary sciences.
- Earth 201-0 Surface Processes
- Three 300 level courses in addition to Earth 350 (Physics of the Earth for ISP)
For more information, please contact Dr. Brad Sageman in the Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences.
Students majoring in ISP who wish to complete a second major in environmental sciences should fulfill the following requirements in place of the usual requirements for the major in environmental sciences. They may not substitute ISP 398 or Env 398 for Math 383 and must take the following additional courses:
- Earth 201-0 Surface Processes
- Biol Sci 210-1
- Two of the following courses:
- Biol 204
- Geog 235
- Geol Sci 202
- Two courses listed under Environment and Society
- Two courses, not in the same department, from those listed under Advanced Studies.
- Two quarters of Env 398 may be taken instead of ISP 398
For more information, please contact Dr. Helen Schwartzman in the Department of Anthropology.
Students majoring in ISP who wish to complete a second major in mathematics may not substitute ISP 398 for any mathematics course in the ISP curriculum, and must, in addition complete one of the complete sequences:
- Math 320-1,2,3 Real Analysis or 321-1,2,3 MENU: Real Analysis
- Math 330-1,2,3 Abstract Algebra or 331-1,2,3 MENU: Abstract Algebra
It is highly recommended (but not required) that ISP students planning graduate work in mathematics take both a real analysis (320/321) and an algebra (330/331) sequence.
For more information, please contact Dr. Michael Stein in the Department of Mathematics.
Students majoring in ISP who wish to complete a second major in physics or astronomy may not substitute ISP 398 for any physics, astronomy, or math course in the ISP curriculum, and must complete six additional upper-level courses:
- Physics 359-1 or 359-3
- Physics 330-1,2 or 333-1,2
- Three 300-level physics or astronomy courses other than Physics 335, 398, 399 and Astron 399
For more information, please contact Dr. David Taylor in the Department of Physics and Astronomy.
