April 19, 2012

2004 ISP graduate CPT Igor Dubinsky is working in Washington, DC this summer as a Congressional Fellow. Igor recently finished up a Masters Program at George Washington University in Legislative Affairs and is currently working for Senator Saxby Chambliss and advising him on military and defense issues during 2012.  More information about the Congressional Fellowships program can be found at http://ocll.hqda.pentagon.mil/confellowship.aspx .

ISP students Nick Boffi, Eric Jiang, Jonathan Kernes, Charlie Manzoni, Robert Porter, Bo Qin, Louis Shekhtman, and Brad Solomon recently earned Summer Undergraduate Research Grants from Office of the Provost and the Undergraduate Research Grants Committee to work on their independent research projects this summer.

ISP 2011 graduate Yuri Malina, co-founder of Design for America and current Segal Post-Baccalaureate Fellow, was recently featured in the busines section of the Chicago Tribune along with his business partner and fellow Segal Fellow, Mert Iseri. Yuri and Mert's company, SwipeSense was awarded $50,000 in seed capital to develop their business plan to manufacture and market their new hand-sanitation device.

2011 ISP graduate Lu Yao was recently awarded two NSF Fellowships for 2012. Lu was awarded an NSF Graduate Research Fellowship as well as an NSF EAPSI (East Asia and Pacific Summer Institutes) Fellowship. Lu will travel to China where she will CT scan fossil macaque skulls.

Jennifer Mills has been awarded a Goldwater Scholarship for the 2012-2013 academic year. The Goldwater Scholarship is one of the most desirable undergraduate awards. Three Goldwater Scholarships were awarded to Northwestern students. The purpose of the Goldwater Foundation is to provide a continuing source of highly qualified scientists, mathematicians, and engineers by awarding scholarships to college students who intend to pursue careers in these fields. ISP 35 Year Reunion

The Integrated Science Program will be holding its 35 Year Reunion During Homecoming Weekend 2011. We will have events on Friday, October 21 and Saturday October 22nd. All current and past students, faculty, and staff are cordially invited to attend.

This should be a really great couple of days with lots of opportunities to network with past ISP alums and catch up with current students.

Friday October 21

5:00-6:30 pm: ISP Networking session at ISP House 616 Noyes Street.

This will be held outside under a tent if the weather is good and includes pizza at 6:00 PM.

Please note location change. All of Saturday’s morning activities will take place in Silverman Hall.

10:00-1:00 pm Continental breakfast/brunch followed by faculty talks in the CAMI conference room and posters presentations by current ISP students in the lobby of the first floor of the brand-new Silverman Hall (2170 Campus Drive) East Tower

ISP students will present their posters starting at 10 am.

At 10:45, Professor Thomas J. Meade from the Department of Chemistry will present a talk entitled "Seeing is Believing" on his research into biological imaging and theranostic agents.  In addition, he will give a tour and demonstration of the fabulous CAMI facility.  See:

At 12:00, Earth and Planetary Science Professor Emile Okal will give a talk entitled "Tsunami investigations: Interfacing Science and Society".  This talk concerns his research on the major earthquakes and tsunamis that occurred over the last few years (Sumatra and Japan).

Note: There is some construction in the lot nearest to Silverman. The best place to park for access to Silverman hall will be the lots south of the Sports and Aquatic Center and east of Campus Drive near the Allen Center. Be sure to check on this, because there are some parking slots on campus that are enforced 24/7.

Congratulations to our 2011 Graduates!

We had 16 students graduating this spring: Fourteen from EC07 and two from EC08.

The EC08 Graduates are Asna Ansari and Yuri Malina. Andrew, Gina, Saran, Anil, and Asna all graduated with honors in ISP. Andrew also received the ISP Distinguished Thesis Award. Anil, Alex Wright, and Zack received the ISP Student Service Award. We're very proud of all of you!

Liuchuan Tong (EC08) was recently selected as a 2011-12 Katherine L. Krieghbaum Scholar. Katherine L. Kriegbaum Scholarships provide research grants for senior-year research projects. The scholarships are awarded by the Weinberg College Committee on Superior Students and Honors to those Weinberg College students who, in the judgment of the Committee, best demonstrate promise of distinguished research in their major.

Ethan Coffel, Jennifer Mills (both EC09), and Matthew Nubbe (EC07) along with Katie Jaycox (Materials Science and Earth and Planetary Sciences) and Johnny Sun (Electrical Engineering) received $5000 from Weinberg College to support the Northwestern Microgravity Group. The student group, which was founded last year, was selected to participate in Microgravity University. The NU Microgravity Group will travel to Houston conduct an experiment by invitation of NASA on a microgravity aircraft this July.

ISP Senior (EC07) Aleksandr Zhukhovitskiy has been awarded a National Defense Science and Engineering Graduate (NDSEG) Fellowship. NDSEG Fellowships are awarded to applicants who will pursue a doctoral degree in an areas of DoD interest.

Our students and alums have had a banner year so far with fellowships and scholarships.

Four ISP alumni have won NSF Graduate Research Fellowships: David Ackerman (EC06), Dane Holte (EC05), James Kath (EC05), and Thomas Wytock (EC04).

Three current students have been awarded NSF Fellowships as well: Dennis Hu, Michelle Miller, and Aleksandr Zhukhovitskiy (All EC07).

ISP Freshman Adviser and former ISP Director Professor Michael Stein of the NU Math Department was recently honored with the Weinberg College Community Building Award. The award recognizes faculty who foster a sense of community both inside and outside the classroom and who make students feel valued as members of the Northwestern intellectual community.

ISP Freshman Adviser and Biological Science 311 (Neurobiology) instructor Professor Indira Raman was awarded a Charles Deering McCormick Professorship of Teaching Excellence.

The professorship is awarded to those individual faculty members who have consistently demonstrated outstanding performance in classroom teaching, or who have developed significant innovations which have also influenced the methods and teaching effectiveness of other faculty.

At the recent 6th annual Chicago Area Undergraduate Research Symposium (CAURS) ISP junior Dennis Hu received the Award for Top Oral Presentation. Dennis is majoring in ISP, Chemistry, Math,  and Biology. His research advisor is Regan Thomson. ISP junior Lu Yao received the award for Top Overall Presentation. Lu's majors are ISP, Anthropology, and Chemistry. Her research advisor is Robert Martin (Field Museum).

James Kath (EC05) was recently awarded the prestigious James Mills Peirce Fellowship from Harvard University for incoming students in the natural sciences and engineering. James will be entering the Biophysics graduate program at Harvard this fall.

ISP and Earth and Planetary Sciences (EPS) Field Trip

On October 24, EPS professor Seth Stein led a group of ISP and EPS students on a field trip to Glacial Park in McHenry County, IL. This park covers over 2,806 acres and has a rich biological diversity. In addition to learning many interesting facts about the topography of the park,  everyone had a great time.

Sharan Srinivasan received our first-ever ISP Student Service Award, while Eric Kramer and James Kath shared the ISP Honors Prize. We also gave our first Faculty Service Awards to Professors David Buchholz, Indira Raman, and Michael Stein for the dedication to ISP.

EC05 student Samantha Brown recently won a National Defense Science and Engineering Graduate Fellowship (NDSEG). The Department of Defense is committed to increasing the number and quality of our nation's scientists and engineers and it has created this fellowship, which is highly competitive and confers high honors upon its recipients. Sharan Srinivason (EC05) was awarded a spot in the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Graduate Partnerships Program this spring. According to the NIH, "The Graduate Partnerships Program (GPP) was crafted to take advantage of the best of two worlds – the academic environment of highly respected universities and the breadth and depth of research at NIH.  The goal is to create a different kind of graduate experience, one which purposefully focuses on skills of the future scientist and how discoveries will be made in the decades ahead." Two current ISP students Zack Nicolaou and Aleksandr Zhukhovitskiy (both EC07) were recently awarded Barry M. Goldwater Scholarships for the 2008-2009 academic year. Rene Boiteau (EC05) was recently awarded a Churchill Scholarship. The Churchill Foundation's Scholarship Program offers American students of exceptional ability and outstanding academic achievement the opportunity to pursue one year of graduate studies in engineering, mathematics, or the sciences at Churchill College, the University of Cambridge. Rene also won a National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship. to carry out graduate studies in the Cambridge Earth Sciences department during the 2009-2010 school year. In addition, Rene won the Frank N. & Lee L. Corbin Prize from the Northwestern Weinberg College, which is presented to an outstanding senior attending graduate or professional school.
